The first time I went up to our family cottage, I was still in diapers. Now, twenty-seven years later, I've brought my baby boy with me. We've been spending a lot of time up at the lake this summer because I'm on maternity leave. My late grandfather built the tiny cabin in the late 1960s and many would call it unsophisticated. The cabin is old and bugs always seem to find their way through the cracks. The cottage doesn't have a telephone, television or motorboat. When we were kids, my two siblings and I explored the lake in a green canoe. Our version of tubing was tying an inflatable dinghy to the back of said canoe and paddling as fast as we could. I was always envious of my friends from school, who were spending their summer holidays at Disneyland. I remember begging my parents to take me to meet Cinderella, Belle and Ariel, but despite my efforts, our family continued to spend our summer vacations up at the lake.
Eventually, I was old enough to travel and travel I did. My adventures took me around the world; Switzerland, Italy, Germany, France, Spain, the Maritime provinces and the west coast of Canada. I loved exploring these new places, but surprisingly, I missed vacationing at the cottage. My lake memories are part of who I am and I'm grateful my parents saw the value in spending vacation time in one spot.
In the early mornings, we assemble on the deck to practice yoga. In the afternoon, we swim. We eat supper outside on the picnic table and sunset is the perfect time to go paddle boarding or canoeing. Somewhere across the lake a loon calls, it's one of my favourite sounds. After dark, we cook smores over a campfire or go night swimming under the stars. Travelling has its charms, but just give me the cottage.
